Why I Chose STEM
Almost eleven years ago my husband opened his own company providing environmental consulting, after a couple of years I looked at how much money he was paying labs in order to have fungi samples analyzed I thought huh I could do that myself. I went and got training in Chicago to read the samples and then started looking into nationwide accreditation. In order to have an accreditation from the American Industrial Hygiene Association, we have to have a bachelor's degree in biology. This is what started my trip down the road to get my Bachelor's in Biology. I have four kids, so I started slowly just getting some prerequisites done through the community college. Before I knew it I had enough credits to graduate the community college and transfer over to ASU West campus. This is my second semester at ASU and I am double majoring in Biology and Environmental Science.
Even though I have the end goal in mind I have to say that I really do love the science aspect of STEM. While to me biology can get a little confusing I love learning the way things work and how things are actually made up of. For example, most people don't realize how many things are living in the dirt in our front or back yards. Its amazing to be able to get samples under the microscope and see all the different creatures that are living in the dirt. It makes me realize that the world is so much more complex than I ever really realized.
