Dig Deeper

After participating in several classes now there is something I feel is very important for everyone to do.  That is to dig deeper. What I mean by digging deeper is not taking what we hear on the news or even what our professors tells us as the whole truth, we need to dig deeper. Look into the research see if the research is skewed one way or another.  If only 80 scientists in the world were polled on a subject and 75 of them agree on a topic, a paper will publish that it is the opinion of 97% of scientists.  Realize that when researchers poll, even though they aren't supposed to be if they are wanting the results to go their way or the way the people providing the grant money wants, then the results are going to be wrong. Do your own polling, better yet look at all the research yourself. See what you can find out on the subject. If you end up agreeing with the results that is great, at least you have the solid research to back up your opinion.

Another Semester Wraps Up

 As I finish this semester I look back at all the craziness that is COVID. This wasn't a normal semester by any stretch of the imagination. My instructors did the best they could when it came to my lab classes, however, it isn't the same as getting the hands on experience. There is a major difference in watching someone use equipment or look at what they see under a microscope versus actually using the equipment ourselves and working with the microscope.  Group projects are even harder because you never get actual face to face time with your team members like you would if you were in class. It is much easier for them to ignore the texts and calls when you are trying to complete projects versus catching up with them in class. All in all while this semester was a rocky one, I have to say I am impressed with how everyone handled the changes that were thrown at them. My College Experience

I am an older scholar so my plans have changed rapidly throughout all the years. My parents drilled into me that I would go to college right out of high school. So like a good daughter, I did go to community college right out of high school with a plan to get a business degree and go into accounting. I only chose this because my dad was an accountant and I saw he made decent money so why not. I literally had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Then, I ended up getting pregnant so I quit college, and went to work. Several years later I found myself working for an environmental consultant and becoming really interested in the analytical side of things which required me to get my biology degree if I really wanted to take things to the next level. Well I went back to Glendale Community College and started working on getting my associates degree. The Future

As we are getting ready to wrap up another semester in the next month I am beginning to realize that my college education is almost done. Come December I should have my bachelors degree and while I am excited about that, it leaves me wondering if I am done with my college education at that point or if I should go for my Masters, or even my Ph.D. I keep weighing the options about what to do and I honestly don't think that I am ready for my education to be over, and that I definitely want to be involved in more research in fungus and how it grows and affects the human body. It is becoming more clear that while I am reaching what I originally thought was my end goal in December, it is only going to be a stepping stone.
